What inspired unBrok_n?
This is my personal reflection on a journey that began when I set out to help my brother-in-law make sense of his thirty years of miscellaneous lots from auction and estate sale —He had gotten to a breaking point and we wanted to help, so loads of boxes with thousands of forgotten, broken, and unseemingly insignificant items and ephemera were retrieved from his storage unit and basement and brought to our house for me to embark on quite an unexpected adventure.
Overlooked fragments of the past
As I sifted through boxes of disorganized ephemera, what started as a daunting task became a deeply creative and emotional process. These discarded items began to tell stories, reveal surprising connections, and spark ideas I hadn’t anticipated. Despite the distractions and the overwhelming scale, I found purpose in assigning meaning and beauty to these overlooked fragments of the past. The process became a metaphor for my own human experience—for our shared brokenness, forgotten parts, and longing for connection. In the end, it was about embracing imperfection, salvaging meaning, and honoring the quiet poetry found in the obsolete.
Embracing It
Unbrokenness isn't about perfection, but about recognizing that what remains still matters.
