According to various toy historians, it is the second oldest toy in history, the oldest being the doll. As a marketed toy, the yo-yo has its roots in the Philippines, where Pedro Flores, a Filipino immigrant, popularized the toy and trademarked the name "yo-yo” which means “come come” or “to return”.
Their beauty lies not just in their simplicity but in their enduring connection to carefree moments of childhood. From the smooth whir of a well-tuned string to the satisfying thud of a yoyo landing in the palm, each spin carries with it a whisper of history—an echo of a simpler, more playful time when the world felt just a little lighter, and the string of life was wrapped in endless loops of fun.
It was Donald F. Duncan inspired by Flores, purchased the company and popularized the toy through contests and marketing campaigns.
The irony isn’t lost on me that the biggest “yo-yo” to make its “return” is Donald J. in the white house.
